Inaugural meeting of the Probus Club of Bridlington
29th January 1970
Present:
Mr. A. F. Seymour President of the Rotary Club of Bridlington.
Mr. L. Batchelor (Chairman for this meeting) and Mr. F. N. Wilkinson both of the Rotary Club of Bridlington and some 45 retired professional and business men resident in Bridlington and district.
The meeting was opened by Mr. Seymour on behalf of the Rotary Club of Bridlington who welcomed those present and expressed his pleasure, and also that of his colleagues of the Rotary Club of Bridlington, for the splendid attendance which was higher than anticipated. Mr. Seymour briefly explained that the members of the Rotary Club of Bridlington considered that there is in Bridlington an outstanding need for a club to be comprised of retired Professional and business men and it was the Rotary Clubs hope that, arising out of this meeting, such a club would be formed. Mr. Seymour added that immediately the Club, which he suggested might be called the Probus Club of Bridlington is formed, The Rotary Club would then cease to have any further responsibility for the Probus Club and would immediately hand over to the management committee of the Probus Club full Financial and administrative control.
Mr. Seymour then handed over the meeting to Mr. L. Batchelor, the Chairman.
Mr. Batchelor opened his remarks by stating that several such Clubs similar to the one envisaged for Bridlington had been opened throughout the U. K. and he read to the meeting a copy of the Rules for the Scunthorpe Probus Club, as a guide to those present as to the objects and scope of such a Club. After some discussion, it was unanimously resolved that a Probus Club of Bridlington be formed at the earliest possible date. It was then unanimously proposed that a Steering Committee be appointed with authority to draw up a set of rules for the future governance of the Club. These proposed Rules to be submitted to a further meeting of all interested persons to be held at the Expanse Hotel on Thursday the 12th February next at 3 pm.
The following were thereupon unanimously elected to form the Steering Committee, namely:
Rev. R. Goad
Mr. G. Brinkworth
Mr. B. R. Hardwick
Mr. J. V. Steel
Mr. C. G. Tiffin
Mr. P. J. Walkington
Mr. R. A. Burns
Mr. E. Wilmott
Mr. F. N. Wilkinson
This concluded the formal business and afternoon tea was most kindly offered by Mr. A. F. Seymour on behalf of the Expanse Hotel. The Rev. R. Goad expressed to Mr. Seymour the grateful thanks of all those present, first for so kindly putting a room at the disposal of the proposed Club to enable the meeting to be held, and secondly for generously offering afternoon tea to all those present.
The meeting then closed'
