The November meeting in the Expanse Hotel was very much an “in-house” affair with the club’s assistant secretary, Len Collins telling members about Bridlington’s twinning association with Bad Salzuflen in Germany and Millau in France.
Councillor Marjorie Kirk was very much to the fore in the organisation of the twinning with Bad Salzuflen which began in 1980 and the arrangement with Millau which was begun in 1991. Len, who is a member of the twinning association and has visited both towns showed slides and a short video to illustrate his talk. As the name suggests Bad Salzuflen is a spa town with very salty water which has led to its development as a health centre where people go to take the air and waters. The slides showed a largely modern town but with a number of distinguished buildings.
Millau is in South- Central France and is a town that stands on the River Tarn surrounded by limestone hills. The pictures showed a group from Bridlington enjoying local food, visits to a local market and nursery and attending a festival to mark the cows moving to upland pastures! There were spectacular views of the famous Millau Viaduct designed by Sir Norman Foster and opened in 2004. The cost a mere 400 million euros. The vote of thanks for an interesting and informative talk was given by John Heaton.
Earlier the chairman Jim Hornsby had welcomed members and reported on an enjoyable lunch with Beverley Probus Club held earlier in the month and of an invitation for the club members to attend Filey Probus Club’s carol service on 18th December.
