Probus Club of Bridlington meeting report (7th April 2016)
Bletchley Park and the Enigma Code
After lunch, the Chairman, Len Collins, dealt with some club business then began his presentation about the code-breaking project at Bletchley Park, Bedfordshire, during the Second World War.
Firstly, the focus was on events before 1939, when codebreaking was very basic and the Germans began their Enigma Machine project to get around the difficulties of sending secure messages in wartime.
Next, efforts to break the Enigma code using machines became the priority because there was a large backlog of messages needing work.
However after 1945, everything changed as technology moved on and potential enemies emerged during the Cold War.
Finally he looked at the efforts of enthusiasts to build a replica of the most important machine, the Colossus computer, first built in 1943.
Jim Hornsby gave a very thoughtful vote of thanks to complete the meeting.
Any retired or semi-retired gentleman interested in joining the club is welcome to contact us through our website: http://probusbridlington.weebly.com.
