Our new sports and leisure centre
The Chairman, Len Collins, welcomed the members to the Expanse and also welcomed two guests from the Hunmanby Probus Club. He dealt with some more business concerning local neighbouring clubs before the lunch started.
After lunch, the speaker was Mr Adam Mainprize, East Riding senior facilities manager for our area. He gave a very good update on progress with the new sea-front leisure centre project, soon to be called East Riding Leisure Bridlington. He showed a video of the early stages of construction and also more recent scenes, including aerial shots of the site. Of particular interest were views of the new facilities inside the centre as they were expected to be after opening.
The facilities will be grouped into two zones, exercise-based areas will be under “Tone Zone” and water-based activities will be “Splash Zone”.
The biggest area will be the 25 metre pool, with up-to-date timing equipment for competitions plus a small shallow pool with a removable cover. Numerous sports and activities will be catered for; the whole centre is to be as flexible as possible.
There will be parking for 140 vehicles, including 12 “Blue Badge” holders.
The café in the centre is designed to be easily accessed from both of the two entrances, the sea-front and the Promenade entrance.
Mr Mainprize emphasised the promotional efforts being made, not just in local media but also in Facebook and Twitter. The campaign uses the slogan “I’m ready”. There is expected to be a transitional phase where facilities are moved from other sports and leisure centres at the same time as the new equipment is activated. He expected there to a “soft opening” phase where small groups will be invited to test out equipment and facilities in a limited way.
It certainly seems that Bridlington will be very pleased with its new centre and it is worth every penny put in to the project.
After a lively question session, the chairman called on Roger Stanley to give a vote of thanks.
Any retired or semi-retired gentleman interested in joining the club is welcome to contact us through our website: http://probusbridlington.weebly.com.
