Chairman Jim Hornsby, welcomed members to the first meeting of the new term.
After an excellent lunch he then introduced the guest speaker, Colin Cruddas giving a talk ‘Tales from the Flying Circus’. Colin was born and bred in Bridlington where, due to all the wartime air activity overhead, he acquired a passionate interest in aircraft. Aged eighteen, he joined the Fairey Aviation Company as a trainee draughtsman, later moving to Brough to work on the Blackburn Buccaneer flight test programme, He then spent several years in both the US and South Africa separated by a six-year period working on Concorde. His last appointment was as an engineering manager with Dorset based Flight Refuelling Ltd. He formally retired due to ill health in 1992, but became the company's consultant historian and archivist until finally returning to his Bridlington roots four years ago.
Colin is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the author of some fifteen books on aviation subjects.
After a number of questions an appropriate vote of thanks was proposed.
The next regular meeting is on Thursday 7th November and the Speaker is Robert Chester with a talk entitled ‘How the Victorians invented Christmas’
