After an excellent lunch and good conversation the members were entertained by David Cooper speaking about Life on the Falkland Islands. David is chairman of the Kingfisher Trust, whose base is in West Street and whose charity is helping the homeless of Bridlington. He was introduced by the chairman Ron Major.
David had made several visits to the islands as a surveyor.
With excellent illustration he showed many of the sites made famous in the 1982 war with the Argentinians. These included Port Stanley and its cathedral, the Conflict Memorial, Government House, the British and Argentine Military Cemeteries at San Carlos and Goose Green. The islands which are 8500 miles away and have a present population of 2200, were discovered by an English seafarer Captain John Davis in a sailing vessel “Desire” in 1592. The speaker had interesting illustrations of the islands’ wildlife which included megallanic, rock hopper, gentoo and king penguins and king shags, turkey vulture, oyster catcher, terns and elephant seals. All these in addition to 8 000 000 sheep!
Bruce Petfield gave the vote of thanks for an interesting and informative talk which prompted several questions from members.
Anyone interested in joining the club can find information on the Bridlington Probus website or by phoning Jim Hornsby on 673368.
