At the first meeting of the new year the chairman Jim Hornsby introduced Ron Major, the immediate past chairman, to speak about his “Services Career”.
Ron, a native of Flamborough, began his career in the services in 1950/51. He was called up to do his National Service while resident at Spurn and began with the East Yorkshire Regiment at Victoria Barracks, Beverley as an infantry man. He signed on for 3 years and was sent out to Korea but as that war was winding down he was sent to Malaysia and was involved in jungle warfare against communist insurgents on the island of Johore for 2 years. In this action Ron’s closest friend was killed. From Johore he went to Kuala Lumpur and served in the Military Corrective Establishment. He was then demobbed but 4 months later was recalled because of the Suez crisis in 1956. He was assigned to the West Yorks Regiment in Colchester and sailed to Malta before going in to land at Port Said. He was involved in action against the Egyptian Army before the action was called off and he returned home to be demobbed again at the end of 1956.
After working for the North Eastern Gas Board Ron Joined the RAF in 1961 and trained at Weeton as a fitter. In an early posting he worked on the Vulcan bomber at Finningley. He worked at the RAF bombing school at Lindholme and then moved to RAF Changi and worked with the Gurkhas . He served in Cyprus at Akrotiri and then spent time at Thoney Island, lecturing to ATC’s and spent time at Linton on Ouse working on Jet Provosts.
His much travelled and varied career saw him promoted to Sergeant and Flight Sergeant and serving at Lossiemouth on Sea Kings and Shackletons, at Brugen in Germany on Jaguars and for 2 years with 22 SAS working on Hercules, intelligence gathering and long range reconnaissance then at Farnborough at the Medical Aviation Laboratory.
By the time of his retirement Ron had spent 7 years in the Army and 28 in the RAF. On retirement he worked as an usher at Bridlington Magistrates Court. The vote of thanks for a detailed and fascinating talk about a career of service to the nation was given by Ken Tunstall.
