The April meeting was held in the Expanse Hotel when Chairman Terry Atherton welcomed members and a visitor Tony Scanlon, and inducted Peter Branton as a new member. Members then stood in silence as a mark of respect following the death of member Keith Lowe.
After lunch the chairman introduced the speaker Robert Child from Scarborough, a keen and much travelled photographer, who along with his wife had produced a collection of photographs taken on holiday. But these were no ordinary collection of holiday snaps. They were presented in an innovative way. Each collection was presented as a theme accompanied by appropriate music.
The five themes were of the Falklands and South Georgia and were mainly of penguins, seals and birds; Venice Carnival, which showed people in spectacular fancy dress; Pickering’s war week-end in sepia for period effect and atmosphere; a taste of Kenya which showed Robert and his wife on safari and wonderful shots of a wide range of African big game and other animals. The last theme was of a Goth week-end in Whitby which showed people in all manner of Gothic costume.
Between each theme Robert entertained members with a collection of amusing anecdotes involved during the taking of the photos. The accompanied music gave an added edge to spectacular pictures.
The vote of thanks was given just as spectacularly, in verse form by Cyril Dawson.
